Legal or not, be aware of the consequences. "I tell people, if you're going to open carry, you might as well carry a retainer check, too," said gun rights attorney Ken Hanson . . . . . "Because you are going to create some excitement, and it is going to create police encounters."
Ohio is one of about 15 states that allow unlicensed open carrying everywhere with a few exceptions, . . . .
I personally wouldn't do it unless out and away from any city. No need to complicate my life any more than it is now. Not only are most citizens ignorant about gun laws, it seems that a high percentage of the police are also. I prefer to believe ignorance than meanness.
One of the nicest things about legal open carry is that I don't have to be as careful about printing when I carry concealed.
Most of us don't want to be walking down the street with someone who has a gun, . . .Toby Hoover of the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence.
Well Toby, I don't like seeing pants so low that boxer shorts stick out the top, nor women's tops with bra straps showing but I see that all the time. I don't like going to work unarmed like a sheep ready for slaughter. One of the requirements of a free society is that everybody has to put up with something they don't like.

To Opine or Not
With my being drafted, uh promoted, last March to Engineering Manager came a weekly 3 hour managers meeting. A couple weeks ago the President brought up the subject of civilian tasers. We have a no-guns employee policy and the no-guns sign on the door despite most office employees either being neutral or pro-gun. Naturally I disagree with both.
The question being put forth to the group was whether we should add no-tasers, or something like that to the employee policy. Or that maybe it should be no weapons, but how should we define a weapon?
If the subjuct should come back for discussion, I'm a bit uncertain as to how to express my opinon. As far as I;m concerned the best company policy is to have no policy. We should remove the sign from the doors and remove the no-guns reference from any and all documents. I think an employer can be in bigger legal trouble having that policy than not.
If asked I'm tempted to say just that, but I hate to take the chance of pissing off the man on top. I;m getting too old to be job hunting again.

Been in Hell
Yes it's been a while, and no I haven't fallen off the face of the earth, but I have been to hell and back for the 7th time. Seven of us traveled up to Hell Michigan, near Pinckney, for some great time relieving stress by shooting people, . . . . with paintballs on a 18o acre field. This year I actually only used up 2,000 paintballs despite the new full-auto gun. The arthritic, gouty foot prevented me from playing with my usual agressiveness. I was able to help the cause by shooting many more people than shot me by about 4 to 1. Our side was outnumbered, but we kicked ass. It's great to be good.
Oh and I didn't miss missing the debate.

Misleading, at Best
Eleven colleges permit students and faculty the right to carry across the United States, including every public university in Utah since fall 2006, a community college in Virginia for more than five years and Colorado State University for the past 13 years. I didn't know that. No incidents involving gun violence, accidental discharge or gun theft have occurred on these campuses since legalizing concealed carry. All the data reported to date would predict this.
Texans with concealed handgun licenses are 14 times less likely than those without them to commit a crime and five times less likely to commit a violent crime, according to a report released by the Texas Department of Public Safety and the U.S. Census Bureau in 2000.
If I remember correctly, the reports about my home state, Ohio, are similar.
States that allow the right to carry have lower crime rates than the other states. According to a FBI study in 2006, rates were lower for violent crime by 26 percent, murder 31 percent, robbery 51 percent and aggravated assault 15 percent.
So when the anti-gunnies say gun control laws are for public safety and to reduce crime, they're misleading all who would listen. Makes me wonder if there's an underlying agenda.

More of The Same
The congressional Demorats are up to their usual BS.
“Democrat no-energy energy bill embodies the rhetoric-first, solutions-last brand of leadership that has made this Democratic Congress the most unpopular in our nation’s history. By failing to provide states with the opportunity to share in the revenues generated by offshore drilling, the bill gives governors and state legislatures no incentive whatsoever to opt-in.”
Although the bill does open up some offshore areas to drilling, it sets up a revenue sharing scheme that wouldn’t give states any incentive to participate. . . . . The bill actually forever bans drilling within 50 miles of shore and makes law the annual funding rider that was set to expire on October 1st.
Unfortunately for Americans, the expansion in offshore drilling is an expansion in name only, putting most resource-rich areas under a permanent moratorium.
So the Democrat controlled congress is up to it's usual smoke and mirrors, an energy bill that does basically nothing to help.
Last week, the House passed legislation by a 266–152 margin to restore the Second Amendment rights of the residents of D.C.
Sadly, Sen. Reid refuses to schedule a vote in the Senate. This now seems like a transparent attempt by Speaker Pelosi to protect her pro-gun Democrats going into the Congressional elections this November by passing this bill in the expectation that the Senate will not consider the bill before the end of the year. Emphasis added
So when they tire of the smoke screen, or maybe adding to it, they mix in a little evil. No wonder some call it The Evil party. I can't think of a single reason they shouldn't all be fired.

Obama = Anti-Gun Regardless of What he Says
But earlier this year Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer bluntly told the New York Times that Mr. Obama could not carry his state because of his gun control record. "In Montana, we like our guns. We like big guns. We like little guns. We like shotguns. We like pistols. Most of us own two or three guns. Gun control is hitting what you shoot at," the feisty rancher told the Times. When asked why he thought the Democratic nominee could not win the state, he replied, "Guns." Emphasis added.
Only 2 or 3 guns? I thought better of those living in Montana. It should be 4 or 5 guns per person on average.

Hand Wringing
Back in late 1975 the Boss and our 2 very young boys moved from our home area to Indianapolis. We had very little choice because I'd been out of work for 8 months. I don't know how far back it goes, but even then any state citizen could easily get a license to carry a concealed gun. There was no requirement for training. Also a citizen could buy a handgun without so much as a background check. The People trusted the government and the government trusted the people.
Surprise! The crime rate then wasn't much different than now. Go figure.
And now a couple Indiana counties will be issuing licenses to carry concealed after on-line applications, though they must be picked up in person. Because there are backgound checks and etc, this is actually more restrictive than when I lived there. But naturally, there's those that are wringing their hands in anguish.
As far as I'm concerned, scoring 38th by the Brady Bunch, makes Indiana one of the best states to live in.

Void of Logic
I just read a good post over at James, including the dissenter in comments.
This seems to be the bottom line, according to James.
The people who keep getting elected to high office are not stupid. They must realize that the facts prove them to be wrong, yet they still advocate and fight for further gun control laws.
I refuse to go through life believing that all people are evil, corrupt, or any other bad description. Having said that, the more I learn about politicians, lawyors and the political left the harder it is to maintain that attitude because they certainly are not stupid. I prefer to think they are void of logical brain cells.

Now We Have Corporate Welfare
One of the truths about a free capitalist economy is that if government keeps their dirty fingers our of it, everything is self-correcting. Unfortunately, government, even an elected government just can't leave anything alone.
According to Uncle -
So, basically, we have two huge companies and their performance sucks more than Metallica’s new album. The solution to the problem, if you’re a politician or a retard, is to bail them out. What that would mean is our government is going to buy something that nobody wants at a price no one wants to pay with money the government probably doesn’t have to spend anyway. This comes after two other big companies tank. Yeehaw, corporate welfare!
Disappointing doesn't say enough about this travesty. GW may have the lowest rating in history, but there's a reason that congress has a lower rating. Let the companies flush on down the hole. In 6 months to a year, all will be well again. This crap is sure to make things worse in the long run.

Gun Grabber
I knew that Obama was an anti-liberty gun grabber, but I didn't know that OCAGV's (Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence) primary source of funding comes from the anti-gun Joyce Foundation, for which Barack Obama served on the board of directors from 1994 through 2002.
No way folks, would he try to take our guns. Was that a pink pig I saw flying?

Employee Activity
I talked to the HR guy yesterday about posting an invitation to join me at a local indoor range for some shooting fun. He didn't like the idea about posting it, but said I could pass the information out personally. So I left info for 10 people and received a positive response from 8 in the same day, including the HR guy. Looks like I'll be arranging a shooting activity for my fellow employees in the near future.
It's great to live here in this countryy.

The Lights Are on Again
Well, we got electricity once again, and we're back home.
Our house is on 2.8 acres with many mature trees that surprisingly survived the high winds. We have more small limbs scattered about than I care to count, but only one small tree down and 2 large limbs on my roof. The front yard has been cleaned up and the limbs removed from the roof without damage to the roof.
Despite the inconvenience, I rather enjoyed the 2 days off from work. With my eldest on a business trip, the Boss and I stayed with the daughter-in-law and grandson. Two days with my grandson, instead of at work due to lack of electricity. Seems like a good trade to me.

Electricity & The Stone Age
Yesterday a cold front came through with a little kick from what was left of Ike. We had winds that touched the 70 MPH area for a short time but mostly around 60 MPH. We lost electrical power around 4PM yesterday. As I write this it's about 2:15PM so we've been without power for about 22 hours. Right now I'm at my oldest son's home. He has electricity and running water. We don't.
The power outage is spotty over several counties that I know of. Per the local news there's about 700,000 homes without power. The reports are as much as a week to restore power to all. In the meantime we're without electricity or running water at my place, and the food in the freezer will spoil.
I can't imagine what it's like to be in the full force of a hurricane and what it does to society. As a precaution I've had my carry gun on me since the power outage. Electricity seems to be all that stands between civilization and the stone age.
--------------------------------------------------
Update 9/16:
The news is reporting 2,000,000 without power.

EMP
Saturday I ran some errands, then stopped at a local gun shop like I mentioned in a post below. While there I naturally drooled overe a few pieces of hardware. They have an indoor range so most of the inventory consists of handguns. I handled the relatively new Springfield EMP in 9mm. A really nice 1911 cary gun that fits my hand perfectly. I like it a lot, but I'm not sure I like it $1150.

Shipping a Weapon
I think I mentioned before that a friend gave me a Ruger SuperBlackhawk 44 mag, because the barrel split from stem to stern on him. Though he's convinced otherwise, looks to me like a squib followed by a full charged load. Anyway he quit shooting when that happened and gave the revolver to me.
So a couple of weeks ago I boxed it up ready to be shipped back to Ruger. Ever tried to ship a firearm? Hassel, nothing but hassel. It can only be shipped by UPS and from a main terminal. Around here that means I can't ship it myself because of my work schedule, so this morning I took it to a local gun shop. Thankfully they'll ship it for me, at a small fee.
----------------
While there I also talked to a guy about a little project that some co-workers have been bugging me about. I'm now working at a small company where most know I'm a real gun nut. A few that have actually shot firearms before have asked me to set up an employee outing to a shooting range. The HR guy said that the company won't pay for any of this, but if arranged he'd sign up for it. The indoor range guy said they'd make sure we have an extra range officer and basic safe gun handling instruction before the shooting starts. That was my request. I have no problem taking a single new shooter when I can concentrate on what that person is doing, but never more than one at a time. Maybe this week I'll put up an announcement at work to see how many are interested.
The company has a no guns policy and the no guns sign on the door, but most employees, including the top company officer are quite conservative. In the managers meeting last week there was talk about changing the company policy to include other possible weapons like the new taser now being marketed for citizen carry. So far I've kept my mouth shut about that, but if asked directly, they'll certainly get my opinion.
The more shooters we have in this country the better.

Classic Americans
Went on an errand this morning for parts to fix a window. While sitting at an intersection a rather long funeral procession went by. I'm guessing there were something like 20 motorcycles in the middle of the group. I'm also guessing they were part of a club.
Back in my youth, any memeber of a motorcycle club was considered in a gang and part of the lowest in society. I suppose some still think that way.
As of late I've heard of motorcycle clubs acting as guards around childrens playgrounds in bad parts of towns. I've also heard of clubs acting as a screen to keep war protesters from interrupting funerals of fallen soldiers. I suppose there are still some low-life clubs, but more and more these are clubs of classsic Americans.

It's Fixed
My last range visit resulted in my HiPower becoming a single shot. The extractor broke. Mine is a FEG Model PJK-9HP, made in Hungary. It accepts Browning HiPower mags with no problems and years ago I installed a Browning extended safety with just minor fitting. The only other functional modification was when I removed the magazine disconnect and shortened the trigger reach and throw.
Now I just dropped in the new Browning extractor. I guess it really is a Browning HiPower clone, but at only $260 back around 1990(?) I think. I bought it, and 6 mags, because of the looming mag capacity restriction. Besides, it's a classic design that fits my hand.
I own four 1911s because they can easily be modified to fit me, and I like the cartridge. But my favorite design, to date, is the HiPower.

Palin as VP
I was just over at Individ and read his analysis of Palin as a choice for VP. I agree with most, but I particularly liked one of the comments.
Sarah Palin to Secret Service guy on her detail,
" That's a nice rig you got there".
"yes mam".
"228 right?"
"Yes mam."
"Mind if I fondle it for a minute?"
"Yes mam I do mind."
"Fine,be that way. I'll just get one of my own to carry."

Evil Came For a Visit
Today is a not-so-happy birthday. It's been 7 years since we woke up. Nothing like mass murder to get attention. I'm afraid that many have once again fallen alseep.
I recommend reading this heart felt post. May we awake from our slumber and unite in destroying those evil people, for evil they are.

Handloads For Carry
There seems to be tribal knowledge that carrying handloads for self-defense is not a good idea. Something about possible legal implications, though I don't understand why.
I roll my own for most of the weapons I shoot, including 9mm and 45acp. In the near future I'll be loading .380 as well. I target shoot with the same ammo I carry.
So what's the big legal issue?

Extractor
Received the new extractor for my HiPower today. I'll try to install it sometime this week because I intend to head to the range this weekend, even if I can't stand up to shoot. I'll find out how close my FEG is to being a Browning.
Gout
Well the good news is I have gout so there's no immediate surgery. The bad news is I have gout. The prognosis is gout attacks for the rest of my life since there's apparently no real cure. It can be controlled to a degree by diet and if it worsens by medication. Control is decreasing the frequency of attacks, but future attacks will come.
Wonderful. At least it's not life threatening.

From an old TV western I've been watching.
God wouldn't have made them sheep if he didn't want them sheared.
Might be some truth in that.

Castle Doctrine in Ohio
Tomorrow Ohio's concealed carry laws become much friendlier to us good guys.
It is important to note that Castle Doctrine does not apply simply to those with a CHL, or just those who have a gun, but to all law-abiding citizens who are victims of a violent crime.
As stand alone legislation it passed the Ohio Senate with a unanimous 32-0 vote.
The Ohio Senate is finally being educated.
And as usual the media has their heads up their collective asses.

Damn Foot
Yep, I haven't been posting as much lately. My right foot is still sore and swollen. I can't keep it elevated at work, and I've had to quit the medication because it fuzzez my mind to the point of being unable to function. It's better if I can keep it elevated and iced, but I can't do that at the computer. It's throbbing right now with every heartbeat.
Tomorrow I'm going to a specialist. So far I've only seen a GP.
I'm supposed to be in Michigan 9/27 - 9/28 for a big paintball game with the son and adopted grandson. Hope the foot's better by then. I've already paid for it.

Democrat President = National Crisis
A few months ago I decided to go ahead and get an AR before the prices started rising due to higher demand caused by a Democratic President supporting strict disarmament. Apparently the demand has come.
Gun sales are going boom around the country as gun owners and gun advocates brace for a potential Democrat in the White House for the first time in almost 10 years.
When you add in a Democrat controlled congress with liberal judges being appointed, this country is in real trouble. We're on the brink of a national crisis.
Democrats, meanwhile, say there's no reason to worry that presidential hopeful Barack Obama would attempt to curtail access to most guns, . . .
If you believe that last one, I've got a bridge to sell you.

Our Schools
For some time now I've been hearing radio advertisements saying how poorly our school children rate compared to other countries. If true this certainly can't be the result of subpar funding. I read a book recently that claimed our teachers are paid better than scientists and engineers. That same book claims that our children rate with the best up to early elementary grades, then fall short after that.
I once thought the big reason was our success at industrial employment. The 'If dad didn't need an education to get a good paying job, then why should I' attitude. And parents felt the same way. This attitude may be a contributor, but I doubt it's the whole thing.
It seems to me that the biggest failing is the education system being taken over by liberalistic agenda. Students are allowed to fail, and pass on to the next grade level with their 'self worth' intact. They're being taught that they can succeed without trying, without working, or really accomplishing anything.

Now That's Scarry
Instead of worrying about lawful citizens carrying guns, the anti-freedom bunch might be better served to ban things like this.
Remember the Terminator movies? The thing about science fiction, is that if you wait long enough, the fiction tends to become reality.

The other day when my HiPower became a single shot, the hook end of the extracter broke off. So now it's look for parts time. My HiPower is not a Browning but a less expansive FEG version. I happen to know that some parts are interchangable. I'll soon learn about the extracter.

They Don't Trust Me
After that school in Texas said that teachers and staff could carry concealed in school if they had a cary license I thought great, somebody has some sense after all. And now the expected nay-sayers are crawling out of the woodwork. You can see some examples here and here.
And don't try to tell me that keeping legal guns out has anything to do about children safety. It's been proven that those laws have caused the death of more children than before those laws were so popular. It's about trust.
They don't trust themselves and therefore don't trust lawful citizens like me. They trust in luck that a mutant won't walk right in and kill their children. They trust in luck that the police will arrive just in time to save their child, even though someone elses child or children would've already died. The fact is . . . . they just don't trust me, despit the fact that I carry a gun around children . . . all . . . the . . . time.

God & Guns a Winner
For starters, there's the whole God and guns thing. I have limited interest in either but a great deal of respect for those who choose to make either their hobby, or even build their lives around the former. In America the problem so often comes with people who have an equal interest in both. Emphasis added.
What this UK person considers a problem is a strength in the only "land of the free" remaining. That's the biggest influence in making this a great country. Besides, I have no interest in the opinion of someone that gave away freedom to a forming police state.

Leans Libertarian
Looks like Palin is so conservative that she leans libertarian and was once a member of the Independance party before turning Republican. She's apparently the kind of person I'd like to see as president. So that means she's just as likely to hurt McCain as to help his chances to be elected. My preferences are generally in the minority, and seldom win an election.

Sarah Palin - Real Deal
This came vis the e-mail express.
I think it is an OUTSTANDING choice if you are looking for the 'average' American...not a career politician. I see her all the time at the grocery store. Her best friend works with me. She shuns protection. Unlike ALL the governors in the lower 48, she does not have Troopers protecting her. She doesn't want them. She drives herself to work. She fired the chef at the Governors mansion when she got there, because she preferred to cook her family their own meals... You could literally just walk right up to her or her husband Todd just for a chat. Try that with any other governor in the country. It just won't happen. She runs on the platform of ethics reform...and she means it. Half of our state legislature is on the way to prison because of her policies. She may not have the 'experience' to be VP, but what about the Democrats choice for President?????!!!!!!???? He has more experience? Lets see, he's been a Senator for 2 years and before that he was a community organizer?!?!?!? That makes him qualified?!?!?!?? I think this is a very brilliant strategic move. If the U.S. people knew that she was just like them, they'd vote for her. She's a hunter, commercial fisherwoman, lifetime member of the NRA. She's a soccer mom. Her son is on his way to Iraq . He joined the Army on Sept 11th of last year. I could be wrong about her, but i've met her several times and she is the real deal. Her husband Todd is also a Great guy. Very approachable. He prefers to go by the name 'First Dude'.! The only bad thing, is that we will lose her as our governor if she is elected alongside McCain.

Most of Our Ancester Were Immigrants
Immigrants that respected the country enough to enter legally, and expected nothing in return but the chance. As my grandfather was quoted as saying "you American, you speek American." He came here from Germany, and very quickly became American, so much so that he refused to teach his children the language of his birth.
Via e-mail come these words of wisdom.
So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren't being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry.
Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented . Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.
They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture. Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity.
Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany, Italy, France and Japan. None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were defending the United States of America as one people.
When we liberated France, no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.
And here we are in 2008 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges, only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that those waving flags of a foreign country are using them as an example.
And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty, it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I wouldn't start talking about dismantling the UNITED STATES just yet.

Learned a Little
Looks like those in the NOLA area have learned a little bit.
In yet another sign of hardened sensibilities in post-Katrina New Orleans, managers of gun shops and sporting goods stores across the area report a spike in gun and ammunition sales this week.
But they haven't learned enough to live away from the coast and above sea level. Fixing the levies and destroyed property down there is a disgusting waste of money and esources.

Range Day
Yesterday the eldest son and I spent a few hours at the range. We usually start in the rifle area and then switch to handguns if we have the time. Not so yesterday, the rifle benches were full up and only about 4 places were open for short gun shooting.
I had some preliminary rounds of 9mm and 45acp loaded to try plated bullets. I loaded everything the same for both except the bullet. I found that the velocity chronographed 50 to 100 f/s slower with the plated bullets than the Hornady XTP hollow points I've been using. As for accuracy, more testing is needed, but the early results are mixed. For one the accuracy was slightly better, but the other was slightly worse. Due to the many variables involved I'll do more testing before making a decision.
The son brought his Swiss straight pull bolt K31. I took a look at his note book and was a bit surprised. Of the 15 - 20 loads he's tried only a couple had groups as high as 2" for 3 shots, and all were with iron sights at 100 yards. Many were under 1" with 1 as small as 5/8". A fine testament to a fine shooter and an accurate rifle. Those results makes me want to start loading for, and shooting mine more often.
After about 50 rounds my HiPower 9mm decided to become a single shot. It quit ejecting the spent cases. Bummer. Hopefully I'll get the chance to check it out some time this week. In the interum I'll just have to keep 2 45acp pistols in the bedroom instead of one being 9mm.
I was going to mount an old 4X scope on the AR to do some bench shooting for accuracy, but never got around to it. I did some just for fun shooting though. Once again my marksmanship at 200 yards seemed better then it should be compared to shorter distance results. I really enjoy that rifle.
I met a 3 generation group of shooters yesterday, father, son and son's son. All apparently nice people. I love to see youngsters at the range. It helps turn them into better adults.
The Boss and I then spent the evening at the eldest's home. The Boss got her grandson fix, while I helped build a swingset, then we all enjoyed some grilled bratwurst.
So yesterday was satisfying, but today not so much. Repeated icing of a swollen foot isn't much fun.
