Short Lived

Went riding this morning for the first time since last fall.  The Boss wanted to go badly, so I agreed to ride the big TWH gelding.  My western saddle doesn't fit him worth a damn, so I used an old  Australian saddle.  First time I ever rode with one of those.  If I was to buy a new saddle today, it would be Australian.

Our ride was short lived because it was just too much work, as far as I was concerned.  My granddaughter has been cowboying the big gelding so all he wanted to do was haul ass.  Pulling and releasing the reins on a tough mouthed horse gets tiring rather quick.

I wish my mare was healthy enough to ride.  She was like sitting on a cloud by comparison, and very soft to control.  She's not without her issues though.  She's always been a pasture horse and scares easily.  With time I can get her over that, but not for a while.  She still limps when she walks and needs to add muscle mass.  Maybe I can ride her this fall.  Between now and then will be some ground training.

Saw Something Wonderful

at the range this evening.  I saw about 30 teenagers and sub-teens shooting rim fires.  It was a 4H club.  I was told that about 6 of them shoot competitively.

What a wonderful, uplifting sight for an aging old man.

Finally Made it

to the range after work today for the first time this year.   Was intending to zero the Ishapore turned scout rifle after fixing the scope mount.  Stripped a screw last fall.  Unfortunately it was impacting about 3 feet low at 75 yards.  Not enough scope adjustment, so now I'll have to adjust the mount.

So I decided to do a little work from the holster with my carry 45.  I worked very slow because it's been about 6 months.  Besides, slow is smooth and smooth is fast.  Marksmanship wasn't up to my personal standard.  I expect perfection which I'll never do, especially since I work from 25 yards, not 21 feet.

Shrunken Brains

You know that TV commercial where the shrinking machine goes wild and shrinks everything?  I tend to think that most Democrats and all politicians were in the room at the time.  Obviously they have smaller IQs than the rest of us.

Stolen Quote

“A gun is a tool…no better or no worse than any other tool: an axe, a shovel or anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that.”—Alan Ladd, “Shane” (1953)

Fed Gov

Once again the Fed Gov is doing it's best to screw The People.  This time they claim that raising the minimum wage will help the poor.  I suppose it does if putting them out of work, in favor of machines, and on welfare is a help.

Is there anything they do correctly and efficiently?  Nothing comes to mind.

Fire the federal government.

My Girls

Both my girls are getting better, but slowly.

The Mare is walking better, but not normal.  Started her on a feed supplement that is high in protein and fat to help her regain muscle lost while in stall rest. Also ordered another supplement that has minerals that's supposed to help her soft tissue heal stronger.  Don't know if any of this stuff actually works, but worth a try.

Yesterday the Boss saddled up for the first time since having her knee replaced.  She had to mount from the right side because her left (new knee) wasn't strong enough.  Thankfully her horse doesn't care.  She rode for only about 15 minutes in the pasture at a walk, but that was enough.  Her leg was swelling above and below the knee.  She's paying for it today.

The bad news is that I haven't been able to get to the range since last fall.  I'm missing that.
