A Nation of Sheep

Trapped in the bucket and cornered by a large seemingly menacing creature, the tiny mouse, somehow realizing that flight was impossible, decided to fight for its life.

But have we gotten so far from nature that we have lost the ability to fight for our lives? Not too long ago, Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina ran an emergency response drill. A campus police officer posing as a gunman burst into a classroom, where he proceeded to hold the students hostage and terrorize them with a fake gun for 10 minutes. Not one of the students fought back. Not one thought to pick up a chair or a desk, or even a book, to defend themselves. They all lined up against a wall and passively waited for death.

I'm somewhat shocked and saddened that Americans can be and are so meek. The lack of fortitude, except by our voluntary armed forces, is appalling. Are we a nation of sheep? It appears so, except for a few who exercise their right to be armed.

I agree. You would think that America learned its lesson on 9/11. It doesn't seem to take long for the memory of that day to fade, but this is a lesson that has been taught before.

There is a movie called The Grey Zone - 2001 - about the Jews and their resistance at Auschwitz. The end of the movie has the Jews who survived the attack lying in rows on the ground while a Nazi officer casually executes them with a pistol. This is the kind of surrender mentality that is running rampant in our country, and it seems to be coming from our schools.

Homeschooling is looking better everyday.

Okay, so one doofus didn't realize that it was a drill. However, how likely do you think most people would be to literally attack someone that you know is not really a "bad guy" during a drill and who is clearly not armed?

...especially students during a planned school drill.

Every school drill I've been in the students were expected to just follow instructions until it was over.

They were told it was a test of the police and campus security response systems. If I were there, I doubt that I would have done anything other than to go along with the game. We should cut the students some slack here. If it had been unplanned and unannounced, if the perp had what looked to be an actual weapon, and if they still did nothing then I'd be concerned.

As it stands, I don't think it's a big deal or says anything about the state of our nation's young people.
