There was nothing in the way of evidence to convict. Any other verdict would have been a travesty of justice.
Having said that, if the gun toter started the confrontation, he would be in the wrong. No evidence either way. As it is, many lives were effected. One lost and many others railroaded by racist politician.
Have you noticed the guilty of racism are the ones claiming that of others?.

I disagree that the gun-toter starting the confrontation would be in the wrong.
Bear some culpability yes; but the statutes (and moral thinking ) is very clear; even when you start the fight, you don't give up your right to self defense.
Losing a fight is one thing; the person starting it has no recourse there.
Losing a fight where the responder has gotten such an upper hand he is bashing the gun-toter's head on the concrete -- and not appearing to be willing to stop -- is another.
Fear of losing your life is still a reason to employ deadly force.
And as you say, there was nothing in the way of evidence to say that Zimmerman even started it.
