When I touch off a few rounds of .454 Casull (spelling ?) at the range, usually some heads turn my way. Most that try shooting it don't get past 3 rounds before putting it down. I can't handle more than about 30 spread over several hours or my hand starts to swell.
The 458 Lott is a rifle cartridge designed to take the largest and toughest of animals. I'm not sure I'd want to shoot a rifle so chambered, let alone a hand gun. I question the sanity of anyone who would give that a try.

First off, my Ruger Tropical Safari Lott isn't bad at all as a rifle with 500-550 grain safari loads other than feeding costs and puppyish to shoot when loaded in the range of hot .45-70 loadings but I'm not particularly recoil sensitive. The sharp recoil of some of my .30-ish caliber magnum rifles is actually more fatiguing during a day of shooting (to me). Friend just had to dispatch a rogue ele (He's in the employ of the state in KwzNatal). His superior put 3 .375H&H mags more or less in the brain pan but just gave it a headache. Friend seconded him with his Lott with a 500 grain solid and the ele fell like a sack of taters. It's a good round when you need it and it works in magazine rifles, unlike many of the competitors in that "stopper" field.
AS to Pistol Project
For starters, I do not own rifles or pistol barrels nor load for .458WinMag anymore, therefore Lott was the obvious choice for KING OF THE HILL OF FORTY FIVE PISTOLS because I shoot it in rifles/hunt with it anyway. Pistol loadings are differentiated in an obvious way by projectiles and by case markings. You do not wish to confuse the two.
Now as to mechanics:
A: It's also a carbine eligible barrel.
B: It is pretty well braked. I've shot a lot of smaller guns that were less comfy and you don't have to load it to max spec 550 grain ele loads. You can load it with 350 grainers if you want.
C: People questioned the sanity of .375 H&H in a handgun and I'm not the only one that has done that concept. Friend did one for a guy who took a cape in Africa with his and is working on doing the big five with it. T/C cussed 'em shop did one with factory muzzle tamer that was 17.5" long and stainless for a fellow, I know, as I owned it at one point. Muzzle Tamers suck, BTW. I'm on version three for me of .375 H&H Encore and nobody but me wants to shoot it either. Nobody wants to shoot the .450 Marlin BFR or my .577 rifles. Heck, nobody much even wants to shoot my .45WinMags either. One man's fear is another mans fun.
D: It's funny as hell, just in concept, so it had to be done because I have brass and two reamers anyway. Did I mention it's funny as hell?
E: I build things for me not for others. I found out a long time ago that .30-30 heavy deer loads are one handable in Contenders with NO BRAKE a long time ago and it's evolved from there.
F: Screaming 235 grain .375H&H Encore pistol loads hold the LOUDEST THING EVER FIRED at my local 100 yard indoor pistol range (Beating out a .460 Weatherby Magnum pistol that was loaded down) and make the building sound like it's blowing up to people both inside and out. I thought I could improve on that and it's amusing to have a peanut gallery on the other side of the range glass mouthing to each other "WTF IS HE SHOOTING? JAYSUS H. KEERIST!" We all get our fun where we can.
Question my sanity all you want. We all have our hobbies. Keeps me out of the bars.
Truthfully, if you look at loading costs, it's more frightening to feed such beasts than shoot them and god help you if you are feeding them factory ammo at a hundred bucks a box of 20. Nobody shoots boxes and boxes of things in the Magnum Rifle realm on a range day unless they are independently wealthy in a big way. Like machine gun owner and 20mm cannon based rifle wealthy.
Cheers,
From the .458L Lunatic Pistol Man so linked in your post.
