Just because you are a woman doesn't mean you need a man for protection, with training and the proper tools you can defend yourself.
Unfortunately there are a lot of women that just don't think that way, The Boss is one of them. I suppose that's a product of their parents teachings.

I am a 5'4" 125 lbs. 28 year old woman that pretty much considers a gun part of her wardrobe. I have a concealed permit, so I can carry my gun(s) the majority of the time I'm out of my house. I wish more women would carry guns. I think that all women should carry. As it has been joked "God made Adam and Eve, Samuel Colt made them equals."
