Redding Neck Sizer

Several years ago I bought a Chilean 7mm Mauser from a friend who needed the money. And as usual I worked up some decent handloads for it. What I do is temporarily mount an old 4X pistol scope on the rear sight for testing. Later I removed the scope and instead of reinstalling that little rear notch, I put an eperture sight there. Old eyes you know. I found about 4 different loads that shoot 1" groups at 100 yeards.

A few years later I purchased a Redding neck sizer. It was wierd because I had to crimp the bullets to keep them from walking out of the neck. I've put up with that for several years, until now. I e-mailed Redding and asked if they had some issues in the past. The reply was brass became thinner at some time and that the new neck sizers will accomodate the thinner brass. I didn't ask for a new sizer at all, but I was offered one. If I send them the old one, they'll replace it for me.

Now that is customer service.

Your First 1911

Xavier has a post up discussing the choice of your first 1911. He covers things rather well, I think.

My first was a used Llama Max I for about $225. I've probably shot 3,000 through it without an issue.

Number 2 is another Llama, only this time the MiniMax for $240 new. Being a mechanical engineer, and somewhat mechanically inclined, I created a feed ramp for hollow point ammo. I've run aboput 3,000 through that one too, without a problem.

Both of the above were manufactured by a company that is no longer in business. I assume that's because of reliability issues, or a lack of market for bottom line 1911s. Neither one has seen a great amount of use, but to date they've worked for me.

I also have 2 stainless steel Kimbers, Custom IIs both. Mine have the firing pin safety that Xavier doesn't like, but other than disassembly, you'd never know it's there. Mine also have internal extractors. One is a 5" barrel and the other is a 3" UltraCarry.

While I've heard of people having issues with a barrel shorter than 4", I'd bet that's an issue of the past. Neither the 3" Kimber, nor the 3-1/2" Llama have showed any signs of reliability issues.

I like 1911s because of their looks, their ease of personal modifications, and how they fit my hands. Having said that, they're not for the new shooter.

New Toy

For the last several years I've been trekking to Hell Survivors for a paintball extravaganza called The Tippman Challenge. My first trip we were on the Tippman side where I was kicking ass with my electronically fired A-5. The problem was that we outnumbered The World team by about 3:1 so at times it was hard to get into the action. We were getting in each others way.

So I purchased an inexpensive blow back semi-auto just for the trips up north. Now we have been on the World Team and outnumbered. As it turns out that is a lot more fun. So the last few years I've been out numbered and out gunned. And to make matters worse, my inexpensive gun has gotten a bit finnicky. It's been harder to adjust the velocity and the sear doesn't always work as expected.

Since I tend to get into tight spots, by not retreating when I should, I decided to acquire a non-Tippman gun with a higher rate of fire. I just purchased a Proto SLG. It is electropneumatic. It has multiple settings for modes of fire. The one I'll probably use is called NXL. It'll fire 3 shots on regular semiauto with the forth squeeze of the trigger being full auto. Got a feeling I'll be needing that.

To Each His Own

I've been reading James for a few years now. Every so often the 1911 against the world debate flares up into a little fire. Everybody has their personal likes and dislikes. There isn't anything close to a one size fits all with shoes or handguns.

I agree the old horse is dated but I've never experienced the issues, other than cost, that others complain about. When your hands are close to the same size as those of the early 1900s, handguns designed back then just fit better. When I run across a pistol that fits as well, and has a nice short trigger stroke, then I'll certainly consider it. Until then, the old 1911 is my second favorite design right behind the not-quite-so-old HiPower (with modified trigger).

Pink Pigs Flying

Back in the mid 90s congress passed a bill that would allow drilling for oil in Alasks next to AMWR. President Willy vetoed that bill. There's a good possibility that oil and gasoline would not be screwing our economy today if it wasn't for the open-pants man.

And now a Dem controlled congress refuses to allow drilling in the same area. I keep hearing 'we can't drill ourselves out if this' message.

Let's see, . . . If we drilled and built refineries 10 years ago we wouldn't have the fuel related economy troubles we now have. I don't know about other states, but here in Ohio they want to raise gasoline tax because we haven't been using as much fuel the past few years, so revenues are down. So people were cutting back before the skyrocketing prices. Seems to me that drilling, though 10 years too late, will have a positive effect on our economy today and in the near term. That's enough time for the natural progression of a free market to adjust to other technologies without putting us all back in the stone age.

Actually, I believe we can drill ourselves out, at least in the near term. Unfortunately the idealistic Dems won't budge even when reality slaps them in the face, so we're going to have economic problems for quite some time.

My father-in-law, the socialist light, keeps saying the Dems are 'for the working man'. Heh. I saw a pink pig flying high in the sky last night.

Registered For Hell

I just sent in my early registration for our annual fall trip to HELL. For the past 4 years I've joined my eldest and a few of his friends for a weekend of paintball in Michigan. For 2 days there will be a thousand or two people trying to shoot each other with pneumatic powered guns in the 180 acre playing field. It's an adrenaline pumping good time.

To be honest I think sitting around the campfire and telling lies about how well we played, and drinking some adult beverages with the guys is about as enjoyable, but maybe not as much pure fun.

45 Days

It's been 45 working days since I applied for renewal of my carry license. The state law says it must be approved or rejected within 45 days. So tonight I tell the Boss that I might be getting a phone call from the county sheriff's office any day. They're supposed to call and tell me it's ready for me to go there and pick it up. Her reply - Oh yeah, they called and left a message that your new license is ready a few days ago.

Sometimes I wonder about the workings of the female mind.

Feet Kissing

It's bad enough that a city government actually kisses the feet of those breaking federal law, (San Francisco's 1989 "City of Refuge" ordinance prohibits city agencies from contacting the feds on immigration matters.) but to encourage illegal (immigration) activities through TV advertisements is way beyond comprehension. What are they thinking?

DC Run by Criminals

When Heller was refused licensing for his 1911, I contend that DC broke the law of the land.

The District of Columbia refused to allow him to own a handgun after The Supreme Court said that he could, and that refusal is unconstitutional. Those that voted to enact the latest DC laws(?) violated the law themselves. They should be facing criminal charges for violation of the contract with The People, and for being in contempt of court, and of The Constitution. They deserve jail time for the criminals that they are.

Baked Like Turkeys

The eldest called late this morning wanting to either go shoot paint balls or lead. After the Boss told me it was supposed to get up around 90F I opted for throwing lead. Standing or sitting in the shade at the range consumes a bit less energy than dodging and weaving through the woods with a mask covering the face.

I was shooting groups with the new AR using 4 different factory ammo. The best I could do off the bench at 100 yards with the HoloSight was 6 shot 3 inch groups. Early on, while writing notes in my range book, a big drop of sweat fell on the page. Bummer. I got an old towel from the truck and wiped my face every little bit from then on.

At one point I switched to short guns and tried some 100 yard practice with the .357 and .454. My marksmanship hasn't been great lately with the short guns, and sweaty hands didn't help a bit.

After about 3 hours we decided to head on home. By then we were both baked. The little button had popped out on us turkeys.

Heller A Hero

After the recent court's ruling, DC has stuck as many restrictions on gun ownership as they dare including a ban on semi-auto pistols. Our hero, Heller was apparently the first in line to register his pistol.

And what does he pull out and try to register? Daring them to reject him again?[smile]A 1911.[/smile]

Seems the court ruled -
Assuming he is not disqualified from exercising Second Amendmentrights*, the District must permit Heller to register his handgun and must issue him a license to carry it in the home.

Do I smell another lawsuit in the wind?

We're supposed to be a nation of laws by The People, with a system of government containing checks and balances so that the government will remain in control. Obviously some governments need a little slap up the side of the head once in a while.

I Really Don't Care

Back in the dark ages I worked in a factory making refrigerators. There was a woman there that showed up one day with a large dressing on her wrist. She told me she tried to commit suicide but didn't cut deep enough. I suggested she use a sharper knife next time and cut along the vein, not across.

Suicidal urges are powerful - and temporary. The easier the act, the more likely unnecessary death will result. Guns make it easy. Keep them out of people's homes.

I feel the same way about guns as a tool of suicide. Even if there are more suicides when guns are in the home, I really don't care. If you want to put a bullet through your brain that's none of my business. Just don't leave a mess for me to clean up.

I Hate Summer

It appears that most people long for heat, and can't tolerate the cold as they get up in years. I guess that's why some migrate south after retirement. I'd bet the whole state of Florida would levitate if it wasn't for all the old, wrinkled grey hairs there.

Not me though. The older I get, the more I like colder weather. It's just short of 90F outside, and I hate it. I'm sitting in the basement of my airconditioned house where the mercury reads 61F, wearing a T-shirt and shorts. The temperature is about perfect to me.

Damn - - I hate summer.

Open Carry - - More opinions

- - - we two, very openly armed men were standing in the middle of a large chain department store discussing carry options and holsters while the rest of the shoppers and employees bustled about us unconcernedly going about their business without a care in the world.

I know some disapprove of open carry except under controlled circumstances, and feel that it is somewhat exhibitionistic and wont to draw unfavorable attention - in short it "scares the white people". Or as I like to say - scares the sheep.

I've carried openly for years, long before the relatively recent CCW laws here in Ohio, but only while hiking in state forest land or fishing. Never had the gonads to try it in suburbia. Just don't want the hassle.

Confused

This was posted on GOA in May.

The Bush administration, after more than seven years, has finally issued regulations permitting the carrying of firearms in national parks. Gun owners will soon be able to carry firearms according to the laws of the state in which the park is located.

It's about time, though it doesn't ahve any effect on me directly. So far I haven't been caught carrying concealed the few times I've been in a national park.

While not perfect, the proposed regulations, which are likely to take effect at the end of June 2008, represent a sharp contrast with the steadfast refusal to allow for self-defense in national parks.

Now I'm confused. Are the regulations changed or not?

In the House, there are now three bills that would open national parks to carrying firearms as regulated by the state in which the park is located.

If Obama is elected he'll surely reverse what Bush proposed, and veto any such legislation if it should miraculously pass.

-------------------------------

And in June

Senator David Vitter (R-LA) is planning to introduce a concealed carry reciprocity bill next week.

Good luck with that one too. There's just too many Dems in congress.

Buckeye Castle Doctrine

. . . the signing of SB184, Ohio's Castle Doctrine Law, by Democrat Governor Ted Strickland. (Just goes to show that not all Dems are anti-liberty types, just most) Strickland called the bill “common-sense legislation”, (If I hear that term one more time I might puke) and stressed that it will also clear up ambiguous sections of Ohio's concealed-carry law.

Headed in the right direction, we are. Now if we can just educate the masses, and especially law enforcement, that open carry is actually legal in Ohio.

Natural Bridge

Last weekend we took the 2 adopted grandchildren and traveled to what the PR people call the "Rockies of Kentucky". Somebody has delusions of grandure. I've been to the Rockies several times and there's no comparison.

The father-in-law's family has a reunion there every July. Last year we took the youngest and she wanted to go again, then so did the oldest. They spent a lot of energy in the motel pool and even seemed to enjoy the chair lift up to . . . . yep . . . . natural bridge.

That's the youngest riding with the Boss. She's taking a picture of me taking a picture of her.

Hang Her

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi . . . is scheming to impose rules barring any member of Congress from posting opinions on any internet site without first obtaining prior approval from the Democratic leadership of Congress.

I swear that woman would eat her young if it would gain her more power.

They're supposed to represent The People, requiring communication. And have you ever heard of the Bill of Rights Nancy?

We The People Shall Rule

" No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government"-- Thomas Jefferson

When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.--again, Jefferson "

"This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it or their revolutionary right to dismember it or overthrow it."-- Abraham Lincoln

So you don't like the courts decision? Then change the words to say what you want it to say by amending it. You don't think it says it's an individual right? Well you're WRONG, and most of We The People are right.

Ignorant Cops

According to Article I, Section 4 of the Ohio Constitution, "The people have the right to bear arms for their defense and security," law-abiding citizens are guaranteed the right to carry a firearm in the State of Ohio.

And note that it says nothing about the 'militia'. There's absolutely nothing there that can be construed to mean "the people" is a collective. It's "the people" as in each and every one of us.

Because your office is charged with the training of law enforcement officers in the State through the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission, we are asking you on behalf of all members of Ohioans For Concealed Carry, and all law-abiding gun owners in the State of Ohio, to issue a training memorandum to every law enforcement agency in the State clarifying that:

  • There is no statute, in the State of Ohio, which prohibits the carrying of unconcealed firearms, on your person, except in locations specifically denoted by State or Federal law, or in a motor vehicle without a concealed handgun license.

  • A person openly carrying a firearm, and not otherwise committing any crime, cannot be required to produce identification, nor is such an act in and of itself probable cause for a Terry stop.

  • A person who has been issued a Concealed Handgun License, but is not carrying a firearm concealed, is not required by law to notify a law enforcement officer that he/she has a concealed handgun license.

  • Law Enforcement Officers must exercise their judgment and only make an arrest in cases where probable cause existed to believe that the person carrying the firearm is violating the law. Openly carrying a firearm does not mean that the person is automatically guilty of Disorderly Conduct (R.C. 2917.11) or Inducing Panic (R.C. 2817.31).

Until very recently, localities could and did have laws more restrictive than state laws. At least that has changed, in theory. I suspect that locals will try to enforce laws that are now illegal, at least to the point of harrassment. They will also illegally make life hard on those that choose to exercise their right to carry openly. I can only hope that those officers and their respective agencies get similar, if not more intense, treatment in return.

PARA Relocating

I just read that PARA-USA is moving from Toronto to Charlotte in October.

So a firearm manufacturer is leaving the gun unfriendly city in a gun unfriendly country and moving to a country that matches part of its name. Seems to me that if -USA is part of your name, maybe, just maybe you should be located in . . . the USA. Ya think?

Now if only the firearm manufacturers in Illinois would get some balls and do the same.

Black Gun Sales Up

I bought my HiPower as an answer to the handgun magazine capacity restrictions passed back around 1990 (?). I always liked the HiPower design and how it fit my hand, but never cut loose the $ because I didn't have much use for one. The law passed to restrict capacity to 10 rounds was enough incentive to cause me to spend the money on something I liked anyway. So I bought the pistol that accepts 13 round magazines and an extra 6 magazines to boot.

When the so-called assault weapons ban passed I already owned an SKS with enough scarry features to make it illegal to buy. I would not and did not convert it back to legal status.

Now that the prospect looms that we might have Obama as president I was once again inspired into action. I'd been thinking about an AR15 for a couple years, but not enough to dig into my pockets for the money. The thought of a Dem congress and Dem president inspired me to action before the anti-liberty laws are once again passed. I recently acquired a custom assembled AR15.

Every time they try to clamp down on ownership of guns, my instinct is to stock up on the guns they don't want me to have, and plenty of ammo to go along. Apparently I'm not the only one who reacts this way.

Bummer

Being a property owner and husband has many rewards and a few bummers as well. I had 2 days of needed work and an afternoon at the range scheduled for this weekend. So Friday it rained most of the day. Consequently, Saturday and today were spent working around the house and I never made it to the range. To make matters worse, next weekend will be in Kentucky at the Bosses side family reunion. A couple days will be spent in Briar country.

With a lot of luck I might make it for some shooting after work one day this week. I’m having gun-smoke withdrawal symptoms.

Cool

Therefore, it will be Gov. Doyle’s legacy that by reason of his vetos nearly anyone over the age of 21 can carry a handgun openly anywhere in the state (except state parks etc.) perfectly legally and with very few restrictions.

An organization rooted in pro-gun and open carry advocacy is already preparing documents to be presented to every Wisconsin county board to affirm the right of Wisconsin’s residents to carry openly and to prevent law enforcement agencies from interfering with that right by way of dubious and harassing charges of “disturbing the peace” or similar.

Michigan's Process - - Shitty

My youngest son’s brother-in-law lives in Michigan and has a CCW there. He was at the annual 4th gathering this weekend, so I took the opportunity to ask about the Michigan CCW process.

I’d heard that carry guns were supposed to be safety inspected by the local police force. He confirmed that, and added that there really wasn’t any safety inspection, but a recording of serial numbers. He confirmed what I suspected. It’s nothing more than a back door gun registration scheme.

What I didn’t know is that each applicant is required to personally stand before a board of several government officials and answer questions before the license is approved. Between this and the gun registration, seems shitty to me.

The Back Door is Closing

I keep reading and hearing the misinformed complain about the recent “redefinition” of the 2A. It was only redefined if you’re one of the non-thinkers that’s been buying into the left’s definition for the last several decades. And of course it means as intended by those that adopted it. How in the hell could it mean anything else?

Quit trying to redefine it, or going around it. It is what it is folks. There’s a way to change it through the amendment process you know. Oh, wait, you know that won’t fly or you wouldn’t be trying to get through the back door.

Six and Seven

The first center fire rifle I ever fired was a military Mauser barreled for the 30-06. The stock was way too long and I weighed maybe 130 pounds. Every time I squeezed the trigger from the bench it repositioned my whole body and I experienced pain. But shooting an old Japanese turn bolt was much more to my liking, even though there isn’t much difference in the muzzle energy between two. The Arisaka 7.7mm with a shorter stock fit me fairly well.

Several years later I lucked onto an Arisaka that someone had chopped the forearm. I paid a whopping $35 for it. I thought the Boss would be upset because we didn’t have the discretionary money that we have now. I was surprised. She said it was “neat looking”. That also surprised me because I thought, and still think, it's a bit ugly.

What I didn't know at the time is that this rifle is a bit unusual because it still has the mum stamped on the receiver.

Seversl years later I ran across another Arisaka with good furniture, but with a defaced mum. Seems the Japanese ground the mum off the surrendered weapons at the end of the war. That means the first with an intact mum was brought back before the end of the war.

I bought the second Arisaka just to get the wood. I wanted the first with intact mum to look original, so I switched the stocks.

I've always been a little surprised at how well these rifles actually shoot, considering how crude they appear. They're basically a Mauser action with a big knob on the rear of the bolt that's the safety. I'd consider fit and finish as being terrible and the trigger just adequate for an old military bolt action.
.
At some point during the war the quality was actually worse than the 2 I own. The biggest visual difference is the rear sight. Both of mine have flip up rear sights, while the older examples have a simple block around the barrel.
.
I'm not sure if anybody makes ammo for the 7.7mm Jap anymore, and if they do it's bound to be very expensive. The last I bought was about $25 for a box of 20, and that was about 20 years ago. I load my own since. Brass, bullets and dies are still available. It uses the same bullets as the British 303.

Idiotic . . . To The Extreme

This was sent to me via e-mail.

Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized taser. The effects of the taser were supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety....?? WAY TOO COOL! Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home. I loaded two AAA bat! teries in the darn thing and pushed the button.

Nothing!
I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button AND pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I'd get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs. AWESOME!!!

Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave. Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn't be all that bad with only two triple-A batteries, right? There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target. I must admit I thoug ht about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a! mugger , I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong?

So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and taser in another. The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries. All the while I'm looking at this little device measuring about 5' long, less than 3/4 inch in cir cumference; pretty cute really and (loaded with two itsy, bitsy triple-A batteries) thinking to myself, 'no possible way!' What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best...?

I'm sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side as to say, 'don't do it dipshit,' reasoning that a one second burst from such a tiny little ole thing couldn't hurt all that bad. I decided to give myself a one second burst just for heck of it. I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and . . . HOLY MOTHER OF GOD . . . WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION . . . WHAT THE HELL!!!

I'm pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again. I va! guely r ecall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs? The cat was making meowing sounds I had never heard before, clinging to a picture frame hanging above the fireplace, obviously in an atempt to avoid getting slammed by my body flopping all over the living room.Note: If you ever feel compelled to 'mug' yourself with a taser, one note of caution: there is no such thing as a one second burst when you zap yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor. A three second burst would be considered conservative? SON-OF-A-BITCH, THAT HURT LIKE HELL!!!

A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. The recliner was upside down and about 8 feet or so from where it originally was. My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. I had no control over the drooling. Apparrently I shit myself, but was too numb to know for sure and my sense of smell was gone. I saw a faint smoke cloud above m y head which I believe was came from my hair. I'm still looking for my nuts and I'm offering a sign! ificant reward for their safe return!!

P. S. My wife loved the gift, and now regularly threatens me with it! 'If you think Education is difficult, try being stupid.'

Defiance

Looks like the city of Atlanta is openly defying the new state law. Or at least the airport management is threatening to arrest anyone carrying a weapon in the non-sterile areas. I have no problem with open defiance of what one considers bad or illegal laws. In fact that's how laws are changed at times, by challenge through the court system. But one must accept the consequences of his actions.

No Sympathy

The news is reporting that the guy in Texas passed the grand jury test. He shot goblins in the back trying get away with loot from a neighbors house. I'd have no problem protecting my family or myself with deadly force but I'm not so sure I'd shoot one going away from me unless a family member was injured by the guy. Having said that, I have no sympathy for the crooks. It's a lot safer working at an honest job, you know.

Wrong Impression

I'm afraid that the pictures in the post below might give my few readers a wrong impression. It certainly looks like I'm a big long gun fan. Let's just say that I'm a gun fan and mil surp rifles are relatively inexpensive compared to these. Handguns are about 40% of my meager collection and historically I shoot them more often. A rifle at 200 yards (max local range distane), unless the target is very small, is a lot easier than a handgun at 100 yards. I like a challenge when it comes to shooting. As Clint implied, I know my limitations, . . . . but I like to push them.
.
They are .22, .32acp, .380, 9mm, 45acp, .357mag, 454Casull and .44 cap & ball.

There's actually less money invested there than you might think. Only 4 cost me more than $500 each, and 3 were free. Of the long guns only 2 cost more than $400, the new AR and my 7mm mag. The vast majority were less than $160.

I'd Like to Celebrate

. . . the Heller decision buy buying another symbol of liberty and civil rights, but somehow I bet the Boss will object with passion. She now says "why another, you can only shoot one at a time?" I must admit that I own more than just a few.
Although there just happens to be space for one or two more.
Not all are in the pictures because of the narrow doorway, and these are only the long guns. I suppose I should wait until, maybe, next year since I recently acquired the AR15 centered in the bottom picture.
.
I think I'll go to the range this weekend instead. That's good for the marriage because it's less expensive, and also good for the soul.
